There are two really noteworthy books that I consider indispensible for informative (Getting In The Mood) reading about Mexico. The first is Carl Franz's "THE PEOPLES GUIDE TO MEXICO". Unlike other guides to Mexico, this one delves into camping and traveling issues that are unavailable in other types of guide books. Think of it as an "Everything Else But" reommending what-to-see, where-to-stay, and how-much-to-pay". This book is unique in that it helps you to prepare and enjoy Mexico on a level that will make others envious of your good time. There are lots of humorous stories and anecdotes, and general information inside---for this reason The Peoples Guide to Mexico remains my favorite, even after some fourteen reprints. You can find The People“s Guide to Mexico at your local bookseller or at http://www.amazon.com Carl Franz is the author and Lorena Havens does the editing. I never cross the border without the latest copy sitting beside me
Ray Cannon's "The Sea of Cortez" like the People's Guide to Mexico, goes "way back" to the sixties and seventies, but The Sea of Cortez is long out of Print (The People's Guide is still going strong). You might find a copy in your local library. It is impossible for me, even after forty years of reading this book, not to smile at Ray's stories about fishing, Mexican villagers and life in general in the "real" Baja California. This book has a rare gift of making you actually feel like you are there with him, enjoying the magic.
This book was a "Sunset" book published by Lane Publications.
The Guia Roji, is a large spiral binder of Mexican road maps. It is indispensible because it shows all of the toll roads as well as primary and secondary roads. Consisting of sixty some odd pages it shows detail in remarkable resolution. It also has toll road routes, city maps, and even a new section on Belize and Guatemala! Insist on the 2008 map for the latest on toll road openings. You do not want to cross the border without this map!

Traveler's Guide To Camping In Mexico
This is the solitary campground guide for RV'ers and Tent camping in Mexico. It lists just about every campground in Mexico and Belize (several hundred in all), and gives basic information about how to prepare a rig, border crossing paper work, and best of all---sketch maps giving precise locations of sometimes-hard-to-find campgrounds. You will easily save many times the cover price of this book in fuel saved and headaches avoided!
