Course Topic: RVing In Europe
Instructor: Scott Brady
What sort of Motorhome can you expect to rent? Called camper vans in Europe, the sizes tend to be smaller than here. This is a good idea when you visualize the winding streets of medieval towns, driving on a different side of the road and navigating cities. Smaller rigs are better for first time RVing here.
What time of year should I go? In the Spring, Spain and Portugal are best. It is not too crowded, the children are in school, and in Seville there is a picturesque "Spring Festival" complete with wonderful costumes. Or perhaps you can visit the tulip fields in Holland or Luxembourg. If you go in Summer, try the Scandinavian countries. They are not as crowded as many other parts of Europe then. In Autumn, the rates come down, and suggestions include central Europe; the "romantic road" to Munich and Austria as well as England, Scotland and Ireland.
What will it cost? It can be expensive. Air fare ranges around $500 per person, although if you have unlimited time, you might consider a water trip via freighter. An RV will rent from $60 -$200 a day, depending on amenities. You might want to consider lodging before you pick up your RV or after you leave it, any additional tours you might want to take, and the cost of food.
Is it cost effective? This depends on the individual. It can be. You are in control and the schedule is yours. You can go where you want, at the pace you want and eat when and where you want.
What sort of campgrounds will I find? They will usually be smaller. They encourage use of the central areas for cooking and socializing. In certain areas, boondocking is permitted.
How do I find out more? Many travel agencies can put you in touch with 800 numbers of airlines, rental companies, ferries, and tour companies to help with your research.
